Stringtown
a review by Tim
Stringtown as a Whole
Stringtown is an album Jars of Clay fans have been waiting for, for a long time. Hearing the music of a band live is something fans love to hear. Stringtown is an exclusive album for the Jars of Clay fan club members. It took a while to get it but I think that most fans were definitely satisfied with it. The live music of Jars of Clay should not be missed by anyone. The only downside is some of my favorite Jars songs didn’t make it on Stringtown.
Facts about Stringtown
If memory serves correctly, only about 3,000 were made. These songs were recorded live before a live audience.
Blind
Since Blind is one if my favorite Jars song, it should be no surprise that this live version is also one of my favorites. Normally in concert you wouldn’t get the strings that are synonymous with the CD version, but in this recorded version you do and it just adds to the live experience.

Portrait of an ApologyThe live version of Portrait is about on the same level with the recorded version of Much Afraid near the beginning. It is a tad bit quieter on some parts, but it isn’t a major difference. Near the end though things change quite bit and you get a lot of more of the "Jars energy".

Frail
Frail has always been good a song, but it has never really been my favorite song. Regardless of what my thoughts on it are, the one recorded at Stringtown is just absolutely great. When you hear this version, a whole lot of small musical nuances are brought out by the live orchestra, which makes you appreciate it all the more.

Fade to Grey
The last couple of times I have gone to see Jars of Clay in concert, I always look forward to hearing Fade to Grey. And I am always pleased with how it sounds. The Stringtown version is by no means a disappointment to me. The way the guys harmonize and the strings mix together is just absolutely fabulous.

Flood
Flood is one song every one looks forward to at a JoC concert. I am sure that at the Stringtown performance, this was no exception. You can just hear the energy of Flood as the guys perform it. This is one song I would have loved to have seen performed.

Tea & Sympathy
I have listened to Tea & Sympathy a lot off of Much Afraid. I must say that the live version is much better. I just think that is one of those songs that sound better live. I think that’s just because as the Jars are playing they can go through and jazz it up if they feel like it.

Weighed Down
Weighed down has always been one of my favorite songs the Jars of Clay have written. I think it is a combination of the fact that is was based on Four Seven, the way Steve plays the guitar on it and it’s message. But hearing it played live and in concert, it just gets better. Mainly it has to do with the fact that Steve is allowed to have variety in the way he plays it.

Worlds Apart
A Jars of Clay concert is not a Jars of Clay concert unless they have done Worlds Apart. I know it’s a serious song and all, but for me hearing the song sung live serves as a reminder that I should be careful to watch my pride. Something I absolutely love to hear is the climax of the song. The only thing missing in any performance is Mancy Alan Kane.

The Coffee Song
The coffee song is one of the “fan favorites" at concerts but it is not always played. The one recorded on Stringtown is probably the best one recorded ever. It features the full length version that a lot of people haven’t heard because of time restraints in normal concerts.

Sinking
This happens to be the only time I have ever heard this song, live recording or not. It’s possible that back in 1996 I heard but I don’t remember it. After hearing the Stringtown version I definitely would like to hear played at a live concert. The live version has both the recorded sound while still having the live various sounds that only appear in live music.

Liquid
No matter what version you hear live, Liquid is always one the best songs. The Stringtown version is no disappointment. It features lots of bass, organ, guitar, and great vocals. And as always it is a reminder of what Christ did for us.
Facts about Liquid
Recorded on the Tour 101.
Overjoyed
The Stringtown of version of Overjoyed is pretty good. This song has never really been one of the songs l listen to. But I do feel that this song carries over well in the realm of live music.

Truce
I have seen Truce performed live before. Let me tell you that no other version compares with this one. Once it gets going I would have to say this song starts rocking as much and Flood or Fade to Grey do on Stringtown. One thing I really like about the song is it gives Charlie a real good chance to show off.

Four Seven
It’s rather hard to improve upon a classic. Though it very rarely happens, this is one time where it does. This is my all time absolute favorite. I think the reason is the style uses the now standard electric guitar and that Jars have added things like audience participation among other things.

Hymn
For me it is hard to write and to describe how I feel this song. Though it is a beautiful song, it has never truly been one of my favorites. What I like about the Stringtown version is that the sound of it is all acoustic. And I feel that just adds to the worship of the song.
