Frail
a review by Tim

Many people consider Frail to be one of the most important Jars of Clay albums if not the most important one ever made. Even if two songs didn’t make it, it’s the foundation that was used for the recording of their self titled album.

For its time Frail was a revolutionary thing. It was a just for fun “demo” with no real aspirations to be anything else. This meant there was total freedom in the songs to be fully creative; no real worry if people didn’t like it. With that it allowed for a lot of great song variation. A few songs from were used for some class projects though.

Some of Frails highlights are the little things like the background noise and/or filler. Two examples would be the bird chirp found in Like a Child or the muffled speech found in Frail. Something else is the background music and drum loops. Both of these give Frail a very unique richness which helps set it apart.

For me there is only one really negative issue with Frail. l am not sure why but Frail is very quiet when being played. So to really hear it you have to turn it up. This causes an unpleasant hiss to be heard while it is being played. This isn't all that major but it is annoying when using a MP3 Player or there is a lot of noise around you.
